The Antique Aeroplane Association of Australia (AAAA)

The Antique Aeroplane Association of Australia (AAAA) is a growing and diverse organisation of members from a broad range of backgrounds, who all have one thing in common – a passion for aviation. Formed in 1974 by a group of aircraft owners and enthusiasts the AAAA filled the need for an Association to represent the interests of owners of old aeroplanes at a time when aircraft were being exported or forced out of the air by heavy Government charges.

    AAAA Categories

The Antique Aeroplane Association of Australia (AAAA) recognises four separate categories of historical aircraft, all of which have a strong following around Australia.

They are: Antique, Classic, Contemporary and Warbird.

    These categories are defined as:
Antique: An aircraft where first of type was in production on or before August 31, 1945 and including subsequent postwar design variations maintaining the characteristics of the original design. Examples: Beechcraft Staggerwing, Fairchild 24 and all Auster variants.

Classic: An aircraft where first of type was in production on or after September 1, 1945, up to and including December 31, 1955.

Contemporary: An aircraft where first of type was in production after January 1, 1956, up to and including December 31, 1970.

Warbird: Encompassing all aircraft previously operated by the military forces of any country. This category is also extended to include such aircraft as Yaks and Nanchangs.
