Station Commander – Group Captain Tim O’Brien ADC MA RAF: A very warm welcome to the Royal Air Force Northolt Website.

If you happen to be posted here may I wish you an enjoyable tour at this busy but friendly Station set close to London but with extremely good links to the surrounding countryside. As an operational aerodrome since 1915, the Station enjoys close ties to the local community including some very good schools. The nearby town of Ruislip is blessed with a variety of good quality family-run shops. There are so many things to do in and around the area you and your family will be spoilt for choice.
If you are a visitor to our site, I hope you enjoy taking a look around and learn a little of what, how and why we do what we do! After all, we are part of ‚your‘ Royal Air Force.

The close proximity of RAF Northolt to London has meant that the Station has always had an important role to play in supporting the country. Be it in the early days of aviation development following the establishment of the airfield in 1915, through the Second World War when the unit was home to several squadrons involved in the Battle of Britain, to the modern day when the Station is often the backdrop to events on the World Stage. The Station is proud of both its history and its current role, in particular as the home of number 32(The Royal) Squadron. Official visitors cover the widest spectrum and include British and Foreign Royalty, Heads of State and Government Ministers, military personnel of both the British and Foreign armed forces and many civilian VIPs and celebrities who enjoy the privacy and first-class passenger handling service available.

Over 95 years as a military flying station means that RAF Northolt is a reflection of aviation history. Whilst the airfield remains extremely busy, that is not the whole story. There are a large and diverse number of units from all three services at Northolt who contribute to the success of the Station. Encouragingly, the future is particularly bright and there are busy times ahead. Northolt has been identified as a ‚Core Defence Site‘, and is now home to units such as the Queen’s Colour Squadron and the Central Band of the Royal Air Force as well as British Forces Post Office.

At the end of 2011 the Government announced that RAF Northolt was to be the forward base for Typhoon fast jets and other military elements providing security to the London Olympic Games. Some measures have been taken to ensure that Typhoon can safely operate from Northolt’s runway and these measures were successfully tested during Operation Olympic Guardian 2-10 May. Typhoon will return in July to provide key support to the air security plan and will depart at the end of the Olympics. Personnel on the base and in the local community are proud of the important role that RAF Northolt is playing once again in ensuring the safety of London and its many visitors.
